King Hussein Foundation International
The King Hussein Foundation (KHF) was established by Royal Decree in
Jordan in 1999 to serve as an enduring commitment to King Hussein’s
humanitarian vision and legacy. The same year, the King Hussein
Foundation International (KHFI), a nonprofit 501c(3), nongovernmental
organization, was founded to ensure that the international community also
would benefit from this vision and legacy.
Over the course of the King’s 47-year reign, the Hashemite Kingdom of
Jordan became a regional and international model for social and economic
development and political liberalization. These accomplishments reflected
King Hussein’s passionate belief in the power and potential of each citizen to
contribute meaningfully to national development, as well as to regional
peace and security.
As a Hashemite descendent of the Prophet Muhammad, King Hussein
believed he had a responsibility to reach out to and support all people -
Arabs, Muslims and others - to provide hope and opportunity to help them
achieve their potential and accomplish their goals. He also knew that only
by focusing on a broader concept of human security - sharing the opportunities
and benefits of our world with all people, and enabling them to contribute
in return - could we transcend the deprivation and hopelessness that
so often lead to conflict and insecurity.
The Foundation’s work promotes cross-cultural dialogue and understanding
and, building on efforts in Jordan, advances social, economic, and political
opportunity in the Arab and Muslim world.
