Education & Leadership - The Jubilee Institute
“It is
one of history’s greatest lessons that enlightened citizens are
the most valuable assets a nation can possess, and that
education is the finest legacy one can pass onto future
generations.”
- His Majesty King Hussein
The
Jubilee Institute is a key King Hussein Foundation
program that encompasses the Jubilee School and
the Center for Excellence in Education. Both
provide Jordan and the Middle East with a model for education in
the 21st Century.
The
Jubilee School is dedicated to the principles of leadership,
service to the community, and investing in the enormous
potential of young people to contribute to the prosperity of the
nation, region and the world.

The Jubilee School, conceived during Jordan’s Silver Jubilee celebrations of King Hussein’s accession to the throne and launched in 1993, is Jordan’s first independent, co-educational secondary school for meritorious students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, with special emphasis on students from disadvantaged areas.
The Jubilee School’s unique curriculum, its diverse student body, and an extensive community service program help to develop future leaders committed to the service of their country and capable of addressing the challenges of peace-building in the Middle East.

Recognized as a model school in the Arab World, the Jubilee School offers a unique educational environment which promotes leadership, creative thinking, conflict resolution skills, science and technology expertise, and social responsibility. Its programs and curriculum are highly advanced and inlcude pioneering fields such as robotics, website design, and Math Olympics.
Advanced use of information and communication technology -- combined with unconventional teaching methods -- have encouraged students to explore their global village through educational institutions worldwide.
Based on the Jubilee School’s strategy of employing the latest technology and communication tools, Sun Microsystems selected the Jubilee School to be the site of a state-of-the-art 20-seat Sun Ray academic laboratory, the first such laboratory in a Jordanian school. The application of the Sun Academic Initiative provides access to on-line curricula for both teachers and students.
The enrollment of scholarship students is fundamental to the Jubilee School’s egalitarian philosophy. The Student Scholarship Fund provides individual student scholarships through donations from national and international institutions, private individuals, and financially able parents. The annual fee per student is US$3000, and US$5000 for boarding students. A “Sponsor-a-Student Program” allows donors to sponsor one or more students for a period of up to four years.
Jubilee graduates consistently rank in the top 10 percent on national exam scores for secondary schools. Ninety-nine percent of graduates attend highly competitive colleges and universities in Jordan, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, including such schools as Jordan University, the University of London, Harvard, Brown, Georgetown, and the University of Michigan.
Describing the unique environment of the School, the late King Hussein said:
“When I am in deep stress, I resort to the Jubilee School where I enjoy the democratic educational environment, which is based on freedom of speech and responsible mature dialogue.”

The CEE has set a mile-stone in educational reform in Jordan and the region by launching three initiatives: the
King Hussein Science Garden, Great Exploration in Math and Science (GEMS) Center, and National Education Center for Robotics. These initiatives promote science teaching and learning in Jordan through a unique process of hands-on experimentation and discovery.
King
Hussein Science Garden
Established in 2003, the King Hussein Science Garden hosts 12 outdoor and 2 indoor scientific learning zones. These unique facilities and scientific models offer a rare opportunity for students and teachers for hands-on applications of scientific laws and principles and the use of scientific applications. Annually, thousands of students from public and private schools explore the exhibits and complex scientific phenomena in a fun outdoor environment.

GEMS Center
The GEMS Center (Great Exploration in Math and Science), established in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley, was developed by the King Hussein Science Garden as a training center for science and math teachers aimed at making science and math more fun, interactive, and accessible for both students and educators from Jordan and the region.
National Educational Center for Robotics
In 2004, the Center for Excellence in Education established the
National Educational Center for Robotics at the Jubilee School to introduce computer programming and automated technology. The Center has trained students and teachers from public and private schools. During the summer, the Center organizes a two-week Interactive Summer Robotics Camp for students from Jordan and the Gulf region. Participating students work in groups and receive first-hand experience in designing, building, and programming their own robots.
In 2005, the Center prepared two teams to participate in the 1st National Contest on Robotics. These teams won 2nd and 3rd places. The Center also created a national team to compete in the First Lego League (FLL) Ocean Odyssey All African Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa, and won the Best Robot Design Award, among other awards.
