"CHILD WELFARE" PRESS RELEASESQueen Noor inaugurates the 18th Arab Childrens Congress Wednesday 1 July 1998 Delegations from 15 Arab countries are participating in the 18th annual Arab Childrens Congress (ACC), which Her Majesty Queen Noor inaugurated Wednesday at the Roman Amphitheater in Amman. The opening ceremony included a musical play on Arab Childrens rights, folklore music by the Jordan Armed Forces Band and the ACC son "Watonon Wahed & Bilad Al-Urb Awtani", which was sung by the participating children. The congress, entitled "Arab Childs Rights", will host the prominent Arab artist and UNICEFs Ambassador for Children Mr. Duraid Lahham, who will conduct a workshop for the participating children on child rights. The weeklong program includes a visit to the Jordanian parliament and meetings with members of the Senate and of the Jordanian childrens parliament. In addition to touring important archaeological sites and cultural centers, there will also be an "Arab Night" function where the participants will present their countries folkloric dances as well as a series of drama and art workshops on the congress theme that will culminate in a play performed by the children at the closing ceremony. They will produce, during the art workshop, greeting cards on child rights that could be printed by UNICEF. The Arab Childrens Congress was initiated by Queen Noor following the 1980 Arab Summit Conference in Amman. It brings together children from throughout the Arab world in a program especially designed to promote understanding, tolerance and solidarity. Queen Noor was received by Princess Wijdan Ali, Minister of Education Mohammed Hamdan, Minister of Social Development Mohammed Khair Mamser, Senator Leila Sheriff, Mr. Duraid Lahham, Noor Al Hussein Foundation Executive Director Dr. Sima Bahous, UNICEF Permanent representative Mrs. Misrak Elias and ACC Director Mrs. Lina Tal-Batayneh. |
