Queen Noor, who chairs the UNU / ILAs Advisory Committee, discussed the format and selection process of the Academys second International Leadership Program, that will be held next summer, as well as the Advanced Leadership Program, which is scheduled to take place in March-April 1999. The 1997 Leadership program, that was inaugurated by Queen Noor and by Prime Minister Abdul Salam Majali last June, featured workshops and interactive discussions between 163 participants from 64 countries and 50 distinguished keynote speakers, including His Majesty King Hussein, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mr. Amr Moussa and former President of the European Parliament Simone Veil. The 1998 Program will comprise interactive seminars and workshops on issues of peace, security and global leadership challenges as well as training courses on creativity and leadership skills conducted by "The Center for Creative Leadership" in the United States. The program will also involve a field study component of travel to different regions of the world. According to UNU / ILA Director Dr. Adel Safty, the Advanced Leadership Program is a 6 weeks extended program that will "provide in-depth training in leadership skills and attitudes to a group of participants selected from the 1997 and 1998 Leadership Programs." The participants will focus on a particular global issue, take part in independent research and conclude with a thesis that will be submitted to the Academy. The International Leadership Academy, which is based in Amman, is the first global leadership training facility as well as the first UN institution to be initiated and established in the Middle East. The Academy is planning to begin construction of its permanent headquarters within Jordan University, which has donated the use of its facilities and premises. The UNU / ILA seeks to provide training in leadership skills and attitudes, while fostering commitment to sustainable development and democracy, civil society institutions, and peaceful resolution of disputes.
