"CHILD WELFARE" PRESS RELEASESQueen Noor honors students participating in the Charitable Piaster Fund. For Immediate Release: Wednesday 13 May 1998 Her Majesty Queen Noor Wednesday attended the annual ceremony honoring students participating in the Charitable Piaster Fund ("Al-Qirsh Al-Kheiri") at Jordan University. Queen Noor, who has patronized the fund since its establishment, distributed honorary certificates and commemorative cups to students, school principles and members of the Ministry of Education, commending them on their efforts to enable underprivileged students to continue their education at schools and universities in Jordan. In his speech, President of the General Union of Voluntary Societies (GUVS) Dr. Abdullah Khatib said that the Fund has raised "over 1.5 million JD since its inception for outstanding and needy students." The President of the CPF Committee Sheikh Izzeldin Al-Khatib Al-Tamimi noted that 1100 university graduates have benefited from the fund. The annual Charitable Piaster Fund (CPF), founded by GUVS in 1985, assists outstanding needy students in completing their education by providing them with annual loans and donations. CPF coined its name to emphasize that donations as meager as one piaster are accepted, thus enabling all members of the society to contribute to the fund. It has installed charity boxes in schools, to which students may donate throughout the year. Queen Noor was received by the Minister of Social Development Dr. Mohammed Khair Mamser, Minister of Education Dr. Mohammed Hamdan and members of GUVS Executive Council. |
