"COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT" PRESS RELEASESQueen Noor visits model urban planning development project in Denmark. Tuesday 28 April 1998 Her Majesty Queen Noor Tuesday visited the town of "Egebjerggard", a pioneering urban development model in the Danish municipality of Ballerup. Queen Noor, who has B.A. in architecture and urban planning, said the towns main success has been in "demonstrating the importance of keeping people together despite the variations in income, health and age, which in turn has resulted in their learning from and caring for each other." According the Mayor Ove Dalsgaard, the planning for the town in 1985 " was very democratic as it involved all the citizens and future residents, including the children, from the start and throughout the process." He added that Egebjerggard has "public housing for low income people, youth apartments, privately owned housing as well as special centers for the disabled and the elderly, all of which form an tightly-knit community." He noted great emphasis was placed on environment-friendly housing, most of which have solar panels, as well as integrating modern art into the architectural decorations and public places. Egebjerggard is considered not only am inspiring urban development model in Denmark, but also in Europe where it has received numerous prizes such as the European Unions first prize in town planning. |
