"EDUCATION" PRESS RELEASESQueen Noor meets with the members of the UWC Danish National Committee. Tuesday 28 April 1998 Her Majesty Queen Noor Tuesday met with the members of the Danish Committee of the United World Colleges (UWC) at Their Majesties residence (during their state visit) in Fredensborg Palace. Queen Noor, who is the President of the UWC, said that it was a privilege for her to meet with UWC graduates in different parts of the world to discuss their different concerns and work together on strengthening the role of the national committees within the UWC network. She also expressed her appreciation of the support of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, who is the Patron of the Danish National Committee. The Vice-Chair of the National Committee Mr. Paul Mollerup noted that one of their main goals was to "increase awareness of the UWC movement in Denmark because more young people should have the opportunity to apply." According to Count Frants Bernstorff, the committee sends "14 to 16 full scholarship students per year to the various UWC colleges around the world and the students selection is based entirely on merit." Founded in 1962, the UWC is an equal opportunity international secondary education program designed to foster cross-cultural understanding and global peace. The UWCs, which select students from throughout the world based on merit, awarding the majority scholarships, have emphasized diverse community service programs within their educational curricula. Students at the nine UWCs, located in Wales, Italy, Canada, Singapore, USA, Swaziland, Hong Kong and Norway, study for the International Baccalaureate degree, a pre-university qualification, while the tenth college in Venezuela offers a three year Diploma course in farm management and rural development. President Nelson Mandela is the President of the UWC International Council. |
