NATIONAL MUSIC CONSERVATORY

In 1986, the National Music Conservatory (NMC) was established to encourage the development of accomplished musicians and to promote music appreciation in Jordan.

The NMC offers Pre-College and College Programs in Western and Arab music, enabling students, as young as three years old, to pursue their music education and to participate in international competitions, seminars, workshops, and master classes. The Pre-College program offers beginner to advanced instruction in all instruments and voice. The College program offers a Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance (instrumental or vocal), Composition and Conducting and Arab Music, in collaboration with Jordan’s Yarmouk University. To date, the NMC has instructed over 4200 young students.

The NMC is the local representative of the British Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). It organizes and administers the ABRSM’s annual practical and theoretical music examinations to over 1000 students a year.

The NMC established Jordan’s first professional youth orchestra, as well as several diverse ensembles, like the Orchestra of he National Music Conservatory, the Faculty Chamber Ensemble, the Jazz Band, the Arab Music Ensemble, and the Choir. Their performances are a major attraction at Jordan’s annual Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts, the Arab Children’s Song Festival and many other local, regional and international musical events.

The Orchestra of the National Music Conservatory combines highly qualified performers from the faculty and advanced students of the NMC. This Orchestra is a continuous workshop and a representative of Jordanian excellence in music locally and abroad. Serious plans are in the process to transform this Orchestra to the National Symphony Orchestra of Jordan.

To integrate music appreciation as a fundamental component of children’s education in Jordanian schools, the Ministry of Education commissioned the NMC to develop textbooks, teacher’s manuals and accompanying cassettes for the first five school grades. In cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, the NMC plays a major role in the annual Arab Children’s Song Festival to ensure that children’s songs are based on sound artistic and musical concepts.

Since 1993, the NMC has a cooperation agreement with the French Conservatoire National de Region de Boulogne – Billancourt. A joint Jury of both conservatories meet at the end of every academic year to evaluate the performing standards of the advanced students of the NMC. The certificates and diplomas conferred by the jury have the same rights and privileges as the ones conferred in France.

The NMC, in cooperation with Silver lake College, Wisconsin – USA, holds every summer the Kodaly Music Study for certified music teachers in the region.

The NMC hosts the Secretariat of the Arab Academy of Music (the Arab League) and the NMC is the President of the International Music Council (IMC) until October 2003.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

The Performing Arts Center (PAC) was established in 1987 to develop an appreciation of the value of the arts in the educational process and to enhance the theater and dance movements in Jordan.

Performance by the Dance and Theater Schools of the Performing Arts Center

PAC programs offer children, youth, men and women the opportunity to develop their talents in the performing arts, to explore issues related to a better quality of life, and to express their needs and aspirations freely and creatively.

The Center, considered a unique institution in Jordan and the region, introduces innovative drama, puppet shows and dance. PAC uses artistic expression as an effective medium in education and the dissemination of development messages for all ages. Its programs and activities have received valuable support from local, regional, and international organizations including UNICEF, UNFPA, and the European Union.

Arts-in-Education Training Programs

PAC, a pioneer and model for incorporating the arts in all levels of education, trains teachers, educators and art professionals on the use of drama, theater, dance and visual arts in education. Since 1987, 2600 private and public sector educators and 280 arts professionals have benefited from these programs.

In 1990, in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Education, PAC founded the National Drama-and-Theater-in-Education Team, and in 1998 produced the first Drama-in-Education Guidebook for elementary school teachers.

Theater Arts School

The Theater Arts School was founded in 1997 in cooperation with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington, D.C. It offers professional training for children and youth in acting, directing, role-playing, creative writing, mime, puppetry, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

Culture of Peace Program

The Culture of Peace Program, known nationally as “Journey to Kanafeesh,” was established in 1996 in cooperation with the Spanish government/CODESPA and the European Union. An interactive, multi-media educational program, it teaches non-violent, creative conflict resolution skills to children and youth through theater, puppetry, songs, printed materials, and television programs.

The Program toured Jordan and has been viewed to date by over 45000 children. Building on its success, with support from the European Union, Phase II of the program is expanding into Lebanon and East Jerusalem. Thousands of additional Arab children and young people are being exposed to the ideals of democracy and human rights, good citizenship, respect, tolerance, nonviolent conflict resolution and peace.

Arab Children Congress

The annual Arab Children’s Congress was initiated by Her Majesty Queen Noor after the 1980 Arab Summit Conference in Amman. It brings together children from throughout the Arab World in a program designed to promote understanding, tolerance, and solidarity. The Noor Al Hussein Foundation’s Performing Arts Center hosts and organizes this annual event.

For the past two decades, children and adults from all over the Arab world have excitedly anticipated the advent of July to celebrate the Arab children’s ingenuity and potential in Amman each year.

The Congress gathers talented and enthusiastic children from 14 Arab countries to engage in actively exploring the Congress themes in a series of creative drama and art workshops. The week long conference culminates in a play performed at the closing ceremony with a list of recommendation drawn up by the children that reflect their collective hopes for the Arab region and the world.

The Arab Children’s Congress is recognized in Arab countries as a unique, valuable event of excellence, sustainability and creativity. Due to its impact on Arab solidarity and unity among youth, the Congress was awarded the first prize for Unique Services Offered to Arab Children on a regional level by the Higher Council for Children in the United Arab Emirates in 1997.

Another major achievement of the Congress is the Tree of Tolerance, which was exhibited at the entrance of the UNESCO building in Paris during its 50th anniversary celebrations. The Tree was made from clay slabs and ropes, which was produced by the Arab Children in 1995 depicting 15 Arab country’s culture and heritage.
